FOR EVERY STAGE OF A STUDENT'S LIFE

LEARNING AT LITTLE HOUSE

DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS

THE BEST PLACE TO START

Prior to registration, parents or students may wish to take advantage of a Little House diagnostic assessment. This assessment can be particularly helpful for those who require support in Math or English and can pinpoint problem areas in learning.

These assessments are extremely useful for students as they enable them to understand and identify areas of challenge in a subject, their individual learning styles, as well as suggested strategies to improve performance.

Students take charge of their learning as they work with knowledgeable tutors who use the information from the diagnostic assessment to direct student learning and program planning. Any students who need the Orton Gillingham program must have an assessment done to determine their starting point.

PRIVATE TUTORING PROGRAMS

FOR GRADES PRE-K TO 12

  • Orton Gillingham

Orton Gillingham is a multisensory technique, respected as a highly successful approach to tutoring children who experience challenges with reading, writing and spelling.

Orton-Gillingham approach is most often associated with a one-on- one teacher-student instructional model. The Orton-Gillingham Approach always is focused upon the learning needs of the individual student. Students with learning difficulties need to master the same basic knowledge about language and its relationship to our writing system as any who seek to become competent readers and writers.

However, because of their challenges, they need more help than most people in sorting, recognizing, and organizing the English language. Language elements that others might acquire easily must be taught directly and systematically. Orton Gillingham explains the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind reading and writing.

Our team of Therapeutic Tutors teaches literacy skills in a step-by- step, systematic, and sequential manner using the proven Orton Gillingham method. Your child will feel nurtured which will be reflected by a gain in self-esteem and confidence. We are confident that your child will learn to love to learn!

  • French

We are happy to announce that in addition to French tutoring from Kindergarten to grade 12, we now offer Multi-Sensory training for phonics in French.

The main objective of the program is to use our senses to facilitate learning and memorizing. Links are consistently made between the visual (what we see), auditory (what we hear) and kinesthetic-tactile (what we feel) pathways in learning to read and spell.

Sight words are taught using a series of techniques which provide numerous repetitions in a variety of forms. They will practice seeing the word, hearing the word, saying the word, reading the word, spelling the word, and writing the word. By engaging the senses, you increase the odds of getting the word into the student’s long term memory.

For student’s beginning in French, the first goal is oral communication skills. The student will learn each word in association with a gesture and a drawing. Repetition through different tools will be used as well. Singing songs, role-playing and drawing are all great ways to practice skills and reinforce learning in a creative way. We have wonderful tutors who will make learning French fun!

MULTISENSORY TYPING PROGRAM

FOR AGES 6 AND BEYOND

  • Program Overview

Today, effortless keyboarding is an essential skill required in all aspects of life. For students with written output difficulties, it is specially important to acquire accurate typing skills as they will open new opportunities for written expression.

This method of multisensory keyboarding is a quick, easy and fun way to learn how to type, using the 4 sensory pathways at the same time to promote muscle motor memory.

  • Our Goal

To train students how to type without looking at the keyboard. To master typing skills and build proficiency so they will be able to use them throughout their educational journey and the rest of their lives.

To use all the senses at the same time.

This creates memory pathways between the senses and improves automatic recall. The Student watch the letters being typed on the screen; they say the letters out loud and use the motor memory to find the keys.

This program is taught in a highly structured and sequential manner in order for your child's mind to retain the information. The keys are presented in alphabetic order which is taught in three sections in the form of a poem. The three stanze poem creates rhythm and rhyme which is the foundation of the program.

  • What Will the Student Learn

    WHAT THE STUDENT WILL LEARN:

    • To type the 26 letters of the alphabet.
    • To use capitals.
    • To type all punctuation marks.
