MY CHILD IS HAVING DIFFICULTY IN SCHOOL. SHOULD I HAVE MY CHILD TESTED?
The more you know about how your child learns the better.
We recommend not putting off the tutoring while you wait for your child to be tested. If your child is already experiencing problems, then start tutoring right away.
The first hour of tutoring is a diagnostic where an Orton Gillingham tutor will identify areas your child needs specific help with.
If you would like more information about how to get your child tested please go to the Parent Resource section.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY CHILD TO GET CAUGHT UP?
How long it takes a student to catch up varies depending on the student's learning speed, learning style, and how well they retain information.
Our tutors work at the fastest comfortable rate for their students. Students struggling to retain information will take longer to catch up. The individualized pace of our instruction, coupled with the multi-sensory methods we employ, ensures each student maximizes their learning potential, making for the quickest catch up period.
How fast students catch up also depends on how much tutoring they receive. We usually recommend students receive a minimum of two hours per week. Only one hour a week of tutoring is insufficient time to make real progress.
WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS SUBJECT SUPPORT DURING A TUTORING HOUR EVEN THOUGH THEY COME FOR ORTON GILLINGHAM TUTORING?
If your child is working on something at school that they need help with, we would be happy to help them and work on whatever it is in to the tutoring hour.
WILL MY CHILD BE WITH THE SAME TUTOR EVERY TIME?
Ideally, students are scheduled with the same tutor for each session.
However, if the child requires help in different areas they may be assigned to different tutors accordingly.
WHAT IF WE ARE NOT ABLE TO MAKE A CLASS?
We do not reimburse for missed sessions.
However, with enough notice the tutor will provide the opportunity to reschedule on one occasions for a make-up session.
WHAT IF THE TUTOR IS ILL?
In the event that your child's tutor is ill, the tutor will contact you offering alternative times to meet for a make-up session.
If an alternate time cannot be scheduled, Little House will reimburse for the tutor's absence.
DO YOU ONLY HAVE ORTON GILLINGHAM TUTORS ON STAFF?
In addition to our Orton Gillingham tutors, certified teachers and Little House Multi-sensory tutors teach as well.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY CHILD AT HOME?
When the child is settled into the program, the parents have a choice as to whether or not they would like to have the program binder taken home each session to reinforce and review what has already been taught.
We often recommend this with children who have difficulty retaining information.
We do want to stress, however, that this is a choice and it is entirely up to you.
CAN I CLAIM TUTORING ON MY TAXES?
Your child's tutoring is eligible to be claimed as a medical expense if your child has been tested by a medical professional as someone with a learning disability.
