WHY LITTLE HOUSE

YOUR CHILD DESERVES A MEANINGFUL EDUCATION

Do you feel that your child is not receiving the support he or she needs to have a positive experience in school? For over 15 years, Little House Education Centre has been providing support to students and families who struggle in the mainstream school system. At Little House, your child will connect with certified teachers and specialized Orton Gillingham tutors who understand that not all children learn the same way, enjoy the same things or have the same needs.

We understand learning disabilities. We understand anxiety. We understand distractibility. We understand bullying. At Little House, we understand how to foster positive learning experiences that are meaningful to each student and nurture potential to achieve personal and academic growth. We’re here to help.

LITTLE HOUSE DISTRIBUTED LEARNING

WHEN THE CLASSROOM DOESN'T FIT, YOU HAVE OPTIONS

  • Distributed Learning vs. Homeschooling

    Tutor and kid

Distributed Learning (DL) is a BC Ministry of Education alternative school program designed for students who might benefit from learning outside of the traditional classroom.

Students learn from home (or at Little House) using an online platform, but DL programs are taught by certified teachers and follow the provincial curriculum.

Homeschooling is not accountable to the Ministry of Education. The HS philosophy is that parents know their child’s learning needs best. In this model, the parent is the primary educator.

  • How can Little House help?

Students standing holding tablets and smartphones

At Little House, we want to be accountable to our students and the BC Ministry of Education, while engaging in the 21st century learning of the BC Education Plan. Although your child might not attend a traditional school, he or she deserves the benefit of a publicly funded, organized and enriched education.

Little House will support your child as they engage in a DL program to provide a rich and personalized educational experience and nurture each student’s learning needs. While there is an online component, we are here to ensure that your child is also learning away from the computer in hands-on, exciting and meaningful ways. Through exciting experiential learning, excursions and fun projects, we will foster your child’s enjoyment of learning.

  • What is EBUS Academy?

    Tutor and student

EBUS is a distance learning program and learning community. EBUS provides an online teacher who will provide curricular support and assessment (including a BC report card) for your child.

At Little House your child will be working with one of our own BC certified teachers who will provide academic support, implement the lessons, assignments and activities and act as a liaison with EBUS and your child’s online teacher.

Together with the online teacher, we will plan exciting field trips and provide opportunities for our students to interact with their peers in the EBUS community.

  • Can I get funding?

Many of your child’s activities, such as field trips to Science World, athletics and music lessons can receive funding from EBUS.  Most Students with designations that meet criteria for Special Education funding are eligible to dedicate funds toward academic support. Little House can invoice EBUS directly. Funding is category dependent.

All designated students with EBUS Academy have a special education case manager to help plan and implement the IEP. For more details on special education at EBUS Academy, please click here.

*Please note: Students who qualify for Special Education funding and supports MUST be registered with EBUS and have any designations submitted by September. After this, funding will not be available and additional support will be limited.

Academic service fees may also qualify for a medical expenses tax credit or the Children’s Fitness and Arts tax credit.

FUNDING DEADLINE: Funding applications must be submitted before September 30th.

  • Full Time and Part Time Programs

    • Little House is proud to work in partnership with EBUS Academy, a BC Ministry of Education Distributed Learning (DL) program with School District 91.

    • Through EBUS, your child will have a classroom teacher who creates a program that is personally developed to meet his or her learning needs, with IEP support and curriculum modifications where necessary.

    • Your child will even get a BC report card!

    • At Little House your child will work with one of our own BC certified teachers who will implement the lessons, assignments and activities and act as a liaison with EBUS.

    • Little House will be the accountable link that ensures your child gets the high quality education and recognition that he or she deserves.

    • Your child will become part of an engaging and interesting community of learners, with opportunities to connect with other EBUS students from around BC. When we go on field trips, use EBUS’ safe online student forums, or send letters to pen pals, your child will truly feel the value of belonging to something special.

    • If your child has a qualifying designation, he or she may qualify for up to $10,000 in special education funding that can be used for academic support at Little House. EBUS also provides additional funding for all students that can go toward music lessons, athletics and field trips to exciting places like Science World and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
